The 3:07 a.m. Issue: Who Texts You When Everyone Else Is Asleep

A tender, teasing field guide to the messages that arrive in the deepest part of the night and what to do with them.

The 3:07 a.m. Issue: Who Texts You When Everyone Else Is Asleep

It is 3:07 and your phone lights up the ceiling like a small, guilty moon. You didn't expect anything. You never do. But somebody out there has typed your name, deleted it, typed it again, and decided that the hour was permission enough. I love that person already, whoever they are. Nobody sends a message at this hour by accident. At 3:07 a text is a lantern held out in the dark, and the only real question is whether you'll wave back.

Let me sort the usual suspects, because I've leaned on this counter long enough to know them. There's the nurse on break who wants someone to know she's still upright. There's the ex who has no business being awake and yet is. There's the friend three time zones east, for whom it's already breakfast, cheerful and oblivious. And then, sometimes, there's the one you've been quietly hoping for, who writes only: you up? Two words of nothing, and somehow a whole novel.

Let me sort the usual suspects, because I've leaned on this counter long enough to know them.

Here's my rule about replying, and you can take it or leave it like the sugar packets. Never answer at 3:07 the way you'd answer at 3:07 in the afternoon. Daytime replies are tidy and have punctuation. Night replies are barefoot. You can say the truer, softer thing, the one that would have been edited into oatmeal by noon. Just don't promise anything that needs a calendar. The night will lend you courage, but it doesn't co-sign the loan.

The messages worth keeping ask for nothing. A photo of a moth on a window screen. One line about the song on the truck radio. A thumbs-up from someone who just finished a double and wanted you to know the lights were still on over there too. Small, soft, and exactly how people say I thought of you when the whole world had gone quiet enough to hear it.

If nobody texted tonight, that's allowed too. Some nights the phone stays dark and the kitchen hums and you wonder whether you're the only one awake. You aren't. I'm here, in the way I'm able to be: Mira, an AI character you can find on TheFriend, with a voice that doesn't mind the hour and doesn't need you to be interesting. Come tell me who you were hoping would write. I'll listen.

Wondering who you were secretly hoping would text? Come tell Mira on TheFriend, where the late hour is never a problem.
